Ondra and I came across this and it's one of those simple things that just makes you smile. Cut your own flowers, right there in the field. The kind of idea that feels so obvious once you've seen it and somehow you've never thought of before. Blumen selbst schneiden — "cut your own flowers" — is a self-service flower picking concept common across rural Germany, where farms and growers set out cultivated flower fields with scissors and honesty boxes, allowing visitors to cut and pay for their own bouquets at any hour without staff present. The system runs entirely on trust — a characteristically German rural institution that works precisely because it is treated seriously by everyone who uses it. Flower fields like this typically rotate varieties through the season, offering everything from sunflowers and dahlias in summer to late-season blooms in autumn, and the fields around Gelnhausen benefit from the same fertile Main-Kinzig agricultural land that has been farmed continuously since the medieval period.
